The View – And here we go again …

There’s good reason that I seldom venture forth from my verandah here at The View. Aside from it being a lovely place from which to, well, view the world, and that I have everything I need, including cats, books and coffee … I just don’t like to go out much when I’m on Bequia.

But I did head out this morning for coffee at a friend’s house with the promise of talking about books and reading. Unfortunately, I only made it as far as the roadside at the foot of her driveway before I slipped on loose ground after getting out of the car. Dennis packed me back into the car again and took me to the Bequia Hospital. But the doctor was out in Paget Farm, so we returned to the house and the doctor met us here to examine my ankle. (You have to understand that it’s not easy getting from car-to-verandah in this house! There are a heck of a lot of stairs to climb and, just to make it more interesting, … it was raining!)

So I now have a signed order for an xray that needs to be done over in St. Vincent tomorrow at 8:30 a.m., which means we catch the 6:30 a.m. ferry over to Kingstown. Dennis has already arranged to drive our car onto the ferry so I don’t need to move once I get into it until we get to the hospital, leaving only our stairs for me to maneuver down then up again once we return to Bequia in the afternoon. Otherwise, it’s all flat ground for me for the next while. Lucky our living space is all on one level with only a few small stairs, and for the most part I can ride around the place in Dennis’s wheeling office chair – vroom!

Here’s my bandaged ankle with a view …

I wonder, if I do need to get a cast to set a broken bone, whether the doctor will consider fixing that bunion for me at the same time. Kind of a two-fer operation.

Coincidentally, I realized it was almost exactly this date, certainly it was in early Dec., twenty years ago, that I fell in much the same way and broke this same ankle while we were staying at our neighbour’s house. I had to spend that Christmas in a cast, too.

So, here we go again … am really hoping this is just a bad sprain this time, although I definitely heard that distinctive C-r-r-a-a-c-k! that I’m all-too familiar with after two previous broken ankles and a broken wrist these past 20 years.

You are most welcome here! Enjoying the view with me (and my ankle) from my trailer or verandah.

Susan

  1. You can imagine I am hoping the least worst option for you. Yuk. I am terrified of falling after last year’s ankle disaster. Did you put any weight on it afterwards? If so, not a total disaster 🙂 Ms Cheerful here.

Seriously Susan, so sorry, and wishing you a speedy recovery from whatever damage it is. Fingers and toes crossed for you.

    1. Thank you, roughseas! I knew I could count on sympathy from you, knowing what you went through earlier this year. I haven’t put any weight on it at all. I learned my lesson from the two times previously. And with that damn bunion, two of my toes are already crossed so I had a jump, so to speak, on the hoping department. 😉

      1. Last time (now 18 months ago!) was the first ankle incident I couldn’t put weight on it. Hmm. No, that maybe not be true. The first break could have been the same …

I’ve been writing an update for the last six months! Just never posted it. But, as we age and our bones become more fragile, it’s an important topic, so maybe I’ll get round to it 🙂

Keep us posted and I’ll keep my toes crossed. Sure I’ve got a damn trapped nerve in my toes as part of the package!

      2. Please don’t injure yourself further on my account! Crossed fingers will suffice!

(And now that I have some enforced quality time with my computer, you’ll be happy to know I’m making barbed comments on Facebook to do with our upcoming general election.)

  2. Sounds like a break to me. C R A C K is something I would hate to hear. I have yet to break a bone. Sorry for your accident and hope you mend quickly.

    1. Have had lots of experience with broken bones (broke my right arm at the cottage one summer when I was about 7 and couldn’t swim, because of the cast!!) so I REALLY hope this is just a sprain.

  3. I’ve heard bones heal stronger once broken. Yours should be like rock after this! Get better and use the ‘down’ time well, i.e. the three R’s: read , rite, recover. Hope it’s not too painful…

  4. Susan, so sorry to hear about your accident (but what a view, wow :-)). Since I suffer from a “bacterial African arthritis” I know what a challenge stairs can be. I wish you lots of courage (and of course that the foot isn’t broken)….

  5. Oh, my. That cracking sound is not a good sign. Still hoping it’s just not bone. Guess Santa can forget leaving you skates for Christmas.
“Tempting the wrath of the devil” and election comments? Sounds like you are making the best of it. Do hope things work out and you feel better…or can hop around carefully.

    1. Thanks, philmouse! I should have updated this by now, but have been busy learning to use crutches all over again. It is a hairline fracture on the same bone I broke before and the doctor set my ankle in a fiberglass cast. The best part was being ordered to stay off it for 4-6 weeks, so I’m enjoying this view and unlimited use of the computer. plus the election is being held tomorrow and, so far, it looks as though good will prevail over evil and we’ll have a new prime minister on Thurs.!
